Bring your stories to life in picture book form using Adobe InDesign

Wacom Experience PDX

This two-part class will cover the nuts and bolts of traditional picture book layout, using Adobe InDesign. We’ll talk about page count, folios and endpapers, as well as how to break up text between pages to impact how a story is read and received. This is a text-focused storytelling class. Illustrators, writers and book-lovers all welcome!In class #1, students will work with a familiar existing text to create their own unique versions of the story. In the process, we will learn about:<ul><li>How picture books are constructed</li><li>Traditional picture book page count and structure</li><li>Pacing and how page turns move the story forward</li><li>Making typographic choices to best suit a story</li><li>How picture book &quot;rules&quot; can be broken in interesting ways</li></ul>In class #2 each student will design their own two-page spread, using their own text and artwork, existing text and artwork, or a combination of both. By the end of class #2 students will have the skills and knowledge to put together their own picture book dummy, or design their own self-published picture book. This class is for anyone interested in communicating stories through the picture book format. Maybe you’re a writer interested in understanding how your words feel on the page, or an illustrator who wants to create a book dummy, or maybe you just want to better understand books and how they’re made! Arrive a little early to enjoy snacks and coffee (included in price of ticket).PREREQUISITESThis is a beginner-intermediate class. ABOUT YOUR TEACHERChamisa Kellogg is an illustrator, writer and art director based in Portland, Oregon. She has illustrated for brands, games, animation and children's books including Crying Is Like the Rain: a Story of Mindfulness and Feelings, by Heather Hawk Feinberg, and Some Days: a Tale of Love, Ice Cream and My Mom's Chronic Illness by Julie A. Stamm. Chamisa currently works as a children’s illustrator for Amazon Glow, and maintains an independent illustration practice. She holds a BFA in Illustration from the Rhode Island School of Design.
