Pickling Party with Happy Girl Kitchen

Happy Girl Kitchen strawberry jam on breadSummer has begun and we're planning on celebrating all that wonderful Ferry Plaza Farmer's Market produce with one of our favorite preservation methods: pickling! Please join us as Todd Champagne of Happy Girl Kitchen shows us three types of pickling: quick fridge pickles, canned vinegar pickles, and live culture fermentation! 3 different ways, 3 delicious products.

In this two hour, hands-on workshop, participants will learn and experience these three processes, while also listening to a discussion about other condiments you can make at home (homemade ketchup and mustard, anyone?). Just in time for summer, you'll learn how to throw the ultimate BBQ complete with your very own homemade condiments. Participants will go home with jars of each kind of pickle and recipes to make them again! You might even leave with inspiration to throw your own condiment-themed party at home...?

Date & Time: July 19th, 5:30 p.m. - 7:30 p.m.
Location: CUESA Dacor Teaching Kitchen at San Francisco's Landmark Ferry Building
Cost: $53.00*

*Sliding scale pricing available.  Please email registration@urbankitchensf.org for details.

Instructor Bio

Happy Girl Kitchen Co. was founded in 2002 by a young, idealistic couple, Todd and Jordan Champagne. Working on the verdant farms of California's Central Coast, Todd and Jordan saw the enormous amount of the harvest, at the height of the season, that goes unused and uneaten. Drawing from time spent in Norway, where food preservation remains necessary, they began experimenting with capturing the abundant harvests of the farms on which they worked. Out of those experiments grew Happy Girl Kitchen. HGK now makes over 40 products--pickled vegetables, jams, and ferments—enabling people to eat the delights of summer throughout the year. Based outside of Watsonville, HGK draws from the neighboring small, organic farms of Santa Cruz, Monterey, and Santa Clara counties. Many of these farms are the same seen throughout Bay Area farmers' markets. In addition to providing beautiful and tasty items, they conduct workshops to empower people to connect with and know their own food. They have also started The Preservationist Society, a bulk purchase program, to give home canners access to organic produce and fruits at excellent prices.
