Event Details

This class will explain what phytonutrients are and how they function in the body to lower disease risk. Examples of outstanding food sources of phytonutrients will be covered. The class will also include a discussion of the health benefits of 5 foods featured in Paula’s book, Superfoods for Women: 25 Amazing Foods that Help Women Live Healthier and Longer. The foods discussed will be blueberries, sweet potatoes, oats, quinoa, and olive oil.

Paula’s book will be available for purchase at the end of class for $10.

 

ABOUT | PAULA 

Paula Harrison is a Registered Dietitian Nutritionist, food and nutrition writer, and speaker, whose goal is to help people enjoy a plant-based diet , made up primarily of colorful whole foods that are tasty, satisfying, and health promoting. She has a particular interest in the healing properties of foods. Paula holds a Master’s degree in Clinical Nutrition from New York University and a Bachelor’s degree in Public Health from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. Paula has taught nutrition classes for the past twenty years. She was an Adjunct Faculty member at William Paterson University in Wayne, New Jersey, and at John Tyler Community College in Midlothian, Virginia. Between 2011 and June of 2017, she was the lead instructor for the Nutrition and Food Science Certificate program offered by the University of Richmond School of Professional and Continuing Studies.

She has taught classes for the OSHER program and has spoken about nutrition to various community groups. In 2016, she published a book titled Superfoods for Women: 25 Amazing Foods that Help Women Live Healthier and Longer. Paula also manages Ampthill Farm in Cartersville, Virginia, where she and her husband raise grass-fed cattle and grow tomatoes, squash, beans, sweet potatoes, and melons.
