Agenda (subject to change)

8:00-8:15 Registration

8:30-9:45- Sleep disturbances: the circadian cycle and women’s health conditions- Dr. Lise Alschuler.

According to the American Sleep Association 50-70 million adults in the U.S. struggle with normal sleep patterns. Circadian rhythm disruption is associated with sleep issues. The limbic system mediates this connection. Understanding and optimizing the complex interplay between psychologic distress, inflammation, the limbic system and the hypothalamic pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis is critical in the integrative approach to healthy sleep patterns. Dr. Alschuler will discuss both pharmaceutical and naturopathic treatment options.

10:00-11:00 - POTS, Postural orthostatic tachycardia syndrome - Dr. Marianne Marchese.

Postural orthostatic tachycardia syndrome is a complicated and complex condition that is often overlooked and mis-diagnosed. The majority of POTS patients are women and affects about 450,000 in the U.S. Dr. Marchese will explain the various forms of POTS; neuropathic, hyperadrenergic and low blood volume, and how to diagnose, test for and treat this condition. Both naturopathic and pharmacological treatments will be discussed.

11:15-12:30 - Beyond Hormones: the masqueraders of menopausal symptoms- Dr. Jennifer Nevels.

This lecture will explore the atypical menopausal patient when balancing hormones isn’t the solution. We will discuss the evaluation process for assessing other causes and contributing factors impacting menopausal symptoms. Our discussion will also include a list of underlying factors such as: Mold exposure, Parasites, and Lyme Disease. We will uncover the variety of testing available to identify or rule out these issues. A variety of treatment options including both pharmaceutical and naturopathic will be discussed. It becomes imperative in our sickest patients to not only assist in relieving symptoms, but to look for other factors if they are presenting themselves to really re-shape the patient’s health path.

1:30-2:30 - Skin Health-interventions for hormonal and digestive influences- Dr. Spice Lussier.

Patients often present with a skin condition that may provide insight into their overall health. In the presentation the connection of hormonal and digestive influences on the top 5 skin conditions will be discussed. The material will walk through the steps of a thorough workup and diagnostic testing as well as interpretation. Naturopathic interventions and integrations with pharmaceutical treatment options will be reviewed. The information within this presentation can be easily and quickly integrated into clinical practice.

2:45-3:45 - Hair loss during menopause: causes and conditions- Dr. Andrea Purcell.

It is estimated that 1/3 of women experience hair loss during menopause. Staying up-to-date on current hormonal and non-hormonal treatments is vital to helping women. Treatments, both pharmaceutical and natural, specific to hair loss will be discussed including the link to stress.

4:00-4:45 - Fasting diets and women’s hormonal health- Dr. Marianne Marchese.

As fasting diets and intermittent fasting has become a trend, physicians need to understand the link between fasting and the hormonal system. Dr. Marchese will explain the positive and negative effects of intermittent fasting and women’s health. The pros and cons will be decribed and research linking the two.

4:45-5:30: Fibromyalgia- advances in testing and treatment- Dr. Marianne Marchese.

This is isn't the same condition you learned about in school. Fibromyalgia is a complex and chronic condition.
