Event description

Description

This is a full day hands-on workshop. To begin with, we will dive deeply into the mechanics of colour management giving you a much more in-depth understanding of how colour management works and why it is so critical to accurate digital printing. This really is the science of digital colour workflow, but directly applied, in a practical way that will make sense of the jargon and clarify the concepts.

We then begin to apply the theory, starting with your monitor, because if you can’t see accurate colours in the first place you will never know what the printed colours will look like.

This will be done with practical demonstrations and discussions of the primary differences in the types of monitors available today for the photo industry, and specifically the essential differences between hardware and software calibration. Hardware calibration is really the only way to go for truly accurate colour, along with the flexibility of purposing your monitor for different tasks. General Image editing versus preparing to print, or preparing images for websites and monitor viewing. With Hardware calibration all this is possible, but what is it and how does it work?

Once the monitor is showing you what colours you really have, we then follow the colour management down the line to the printer where I will demonstrate how different colour profiles work with different papers. I will also decipher all those Photoshop and Lightroom settings that can be so confusing and can create total havoc with your print. It's like driving a car, once you know what all the levers and buttons actually do, it just comes down to practise.

We will look at the diverse array of beautiful inkjet media types available today and how they work with different images, helping to create distinctly different effects and moods, from tough hi-quality canvases, standard photographic papers to textured fine art watercolour paper and even almost transparent handmade Japanese paper.

After all this, you get to apply the principles yourself, working on a calibrated, Eizo graphics monitor and using the latest Epson or Canon printer. You will prepare and print at least one of your own images on one of a selected range of print media we will have available.

This course comes with extensive, illustrated notes.
