Event description
Slow Down, Look, Look Again... See Your World with Fresh Eyes. Improve Your Photography and Focus on Time Out for You!

About this Event

Welcome!

Discover a mindful approach to the art of photography in beautiful natural surroundings.

In this workshop you learn to consciously take notice of the present moment and appreciate what is around you, improve your photography skills, as well as take time out for you, reducing stress and improving your mental health, general wellbeing and resilience.

Book and Early Bird ticket and save £20!

We start off the day in the orangery at Rococo Gardens, exploring how to look and see differently, before going on gentle walks around the gardens, taking photos in a calm and mindful way.

The workshop is based on looking and really seeing, rather than the more technical aspects of photography. You don’t need a fancy camera or expensive equipment – any mobile phone, tablet or digital camera will do.

We explore various themes that encourage creativity and insight. For example: colour, texture, shape, form, pattern, light, reflection, movement, growth, change, transition, the relationship between the natural and built environment, connection, other relevant themes...

I offer you tried and tested methodology (formal research from the Univeristy of Gloucestershire concludes that the methodology I have created does improve wellbeing), whilst remaining flexible and adaptable to suit individual and group needs and interests, and the weather on the day. The sun usually shines when I go to Rococo Gardens, but you never know...

People from all backgrounds or abilities are welcome. If you have additional needs of any kind or money is tight, please get in touch and we can have a chat. There are two discounted bursary places available on each workshop.

For more information about my experience, case studies and testimonials, please see the Organiser Description below or my website www.look-again.org.

Here are a few quotes from previous workshop participants at Rococo Gardens:

“I totally loved it. What a treat! I felt like a total amateur when I arrived and I’m going away feeling more competent and confident.” Jess Lloyd

“Beautiful, slow and gentle pace, non-judgmental, very accepting, light, humorous. I’ve felt so blissed out today. Just looking closely, everything else has fallen away. And I feel empowered to do it again by myself any time. What a gift!” Carol Mathews

“It was a very relaxed day, we could be totally guided or do our own thing. We were not thinking about our technique so became absorbed in the images. Just taking time for yourself and letting your mind wander. A great stress buster.” Joy Aitman

“It was a well-processed journey starting with settling down, getting aware and getting creative”. I am a photographer, but get so habitual. The day is fun and easy. Ruth makes you feel like you can just enjoy and explore with no rules.” Holly Mitchell

“I liked the low-key, no pressure atmosphere and non-technical vibe.” Tim Perris

“It gave me a fresh perspective. I began to see things that I would not have noticed and focused on what I saw, not the mechanics of picture taking.” Keith Stockdale

“I took time to look rather than frantic snapping. Also reminded me how to use a camera that has been in a drawer for a while! I think this will help me think of a reason to get out of the house. It can be hard to motivate yourself living alone and having severe anxiety.” Anon

“I will start to use photography for slowing down, being in the moment and dealing with anxiety.” Richard Swann

Practicalities

What to bring

  • A smartphone, camera or tablet. Please make sure your device is fully charged and has plenty of storage space. You may want to bring spare batteries and SD cards.
  • A notebook and pen if you’d like to take notes.
  • Comfortable, warm outdoor-weather clothing and footwear, prepared for rain.
  • An open mind!

Arrival

For the workshops on 17 May, 5 July, and 11 October 2020, please park in the car park and walk to the orangery (straight on, past the cafe) by 10.15 at the latest so that we can start promptly at 10.30. I will be there from 10.00. Please note I will send out slightly different instructions for the workshop on Wednesday 12th February 2020, which starts at 9:30 rather than 10:30.

Refreshments and lunch

Tea, coffee and light snacks will be provided.

Lunch: you are of course free to bring a packed lunch. The food in the café is a delicious treat though if you fancy it... The cafe is very busy on Sundays so if you would like to buy lunch from the cafe, I have arranged for orders to be made at 10.15 before we start and it can be ready for you collect when we break for lunch at 12.30. Menus will be in the orangery for you to see.

If you have any questions please don’t hesitate to contact me, Ruth Davey, by email on ruth@look-again.org or call me on 07789 958895.

Remember: Book an Early Bird ticket and save £20.00!
