Event description

Description

This is a two-day workshop (June 13 and June 14, 9:00 am - 3:45 pm)

Photography is a flexible medium that crosses cultural and linguistic barriers and can be adapted to all ages and abilities. Its power lies in its dual role as both art form and way to record facts. This hands-on, experiential workshop will teach participants how Participatory Photography Groups can be used to create tools for advocacy and communication, as well as a unique healing therapeutic tool to assist individuals, families, groups and even communities, to describe their realities and perspectives, find personal empowerment, express themselves, their emotions and heritage. Participants are highly encouraged to bring digital cameras if they have them. Phones may be used as an alternative to digital cameras.

Objectives

1. Participants will learn definition, methodology, purpose, and goals of Participatory Photography Groups.
2. Participants will learn the benefit of using Photography as a tool for advocacy, communication, and self-empowerment with individuals, families, groups and communities.
3. Participants will engage in a hands-on initial mini participatory photography group to allow for experiential learning on how to structure, run and plan for different types of groups.
