Phoenix in the Movies

Tour with host Marshall Shore, the Hip Historian

Marshall Shore will lead a Retrospectacular tour of famous and obscure locations in Phoenix where movie magic was made. Included in the tour will be Cudia City, where Salvatore Cudia shot “26 Men,” a television series about Arizona's famed Rangers; the Arizona State Fairgrounds, which leant their gritty charm to the 1956 movie “Bus Stop” with Marilyn Monroe, and “The Monkees” television series (1966-67); the Westward Ho, a popular hotel for movie stars and politicians where Paul Newman filmed “Pocket of Money”; and the Barrister Building, the infamous site of Marion Crane’s lunchtime dalliance with her lover, Sam in the opening minutes of Hitchcock’s film, “Psycho.” The tour will depart from the historic Luke Greenway American Legion Hall at 364 N. 7th Ave. (just north of the intersection of Grand Ave., 7th Ave. and Van Buren.

Tour participants will get a peek into the Phoenix’s celluloid past and hear stories that bring the people and places alive.

Marshall Shore’s passion is uncovering the weird, the wonderful, and the obscure treasures from our past: the semi-forgotten people, places, and events that have made us who we are today. Spend an afternoon with Marshall: see what fantastic outfit he’ll be wearing, discover obscure facts about Arizona’s past that will up your trivia game, and celebrate Pride in historic style.
