Philosophy as Lived Life: Marcus Aurelius's Meditations - ii Salon
Event Information
About this Event
"Let's start the new year out by reflecting on what it means to do and live philosophy.
Pierre Hadot wrote that 'there is no discourse which deserves to be called philosophical if it is separated from the philosophical life, and there is no philosophical life unless it is directly linked to philosophical discourse.'
In this Salon, we'll start by reflecting on Hadot's argument that philosophy must be lived. We'll then explore what this means via a reading of Marcus Aurelius' Meditations.
Aurelius' Meditations were never meant to be read by others. Instead, he wrote them as an active means of helping himself to live his philosophy. They provide us one of the best examples of lived Stoicism of the classical period.
Drawing on Meditations, we'll explore the ideas of Stoicism—which seemingly have found renewed interest in the past decade—and how the philosophy can help us live our best lives in 2021." - Salon Hosts Donald Frederick and Luke Butler
