About this event

Philippe Crettien’s North African Suite evokes memories of his upbringing in Algeria, Morroco, and Tunisia, filtered through the prism and perspective of a contemporary jazz musician. The harmonic, rhythmic and orchestrational sophistication that inform Philippe’s compositions and his colleagues’ playing are at once traditional and redolent of the deeply embedded musical environment of his youth.” —Andy Jaffe

Philippe Crettien, born in the South of France, the son of French diplomats, grew up primarily in North Africa, the US, and England. He studied piano and the alto saxophone in high school while attending the French Lycée in London and then attended Berklee College of Music. He has recorded with blues singer Jelly Belly, Trudy Silver, Bill Lowe, John Medeski, Andy Jaffe, Mario Pavone, Bob Gullotti, Andre Jaume, Rick Pekham, and Dave Zinno, among others. He was the artistic director of the Toulon International jazz festival and director of the Toulon Jazz festival workshops from 1991 to 2000. He is currently the jazz band director at The Rivers School in Weston MA, and Jazz chair at The Rivers School Conservatory.

Tonight’s band features Tony D’Aveni (trumpet), Clayton De Walt (trombone), Bill Lowe (bass trombone and tuba), Bill Jones (saxophones), Patrick Mottaz (guitar), Jeri Bergonzi (piano), Sean Farias (bass), and Mikes Connors (drums).

Tonight’s featured guest, The River School Honors Big Band, is an award-winning high school jazz band that has been finalist at the Mingus HS competition seven times — once taking first place. It also won first place at the Berklee high school competition and won consecutives gold medals at the MAJE Senior District and State competitions for the past four years.
