Award-winning poet Terrance Hayes and Rhode Island Poet Laureate Tina Cane read from and discuss their work at the annual poetry event dedicated to the memory of Charles and Deborah Philbrick and to fostering the art of poetry in Rhode Island and beyond. Book signing to follow.

Terrance Hayes is a teacher and student of poetry. He is a 2014 MacArthur Fellow, served as the 2017-2018 poetry editor for New York Times Magazine, and was guest editor of The Best American Poetry 2014, the preeminent annual anthology of contemporary American poetry. His most recent publications include American Sonnets for My Past And Future Assassin and To Float In The Space Between: Drawings and Essays in Conversation with Etheridge Knight.


A Manhattan native, Tina Cane attended the University of Vermont, the Sorbonne, and completed her master’s degree in French Literature at the Université de Paris IV-Nanterre. She has taught French, English, and Creative Writing in public and private schools throughout New York City and Rhode Island and is the founder and director of Writers-in-the-Schools, RI. Ms. Cane's poems and translations have appeared in numerous journals including The Literary Review, Barrow Street, and Tupelo Quarterly. In 2016 she received the Fellowship Merit Poetry Award and was appointed the Poet Laureate of Rhode Island by Governor Raimondo. She is the author of The Fifth Thought, Dear Elena: Letters for Elena Ferrante, Once More With Feeling, and Body of Work.
