Since its founding in 1682 by the Quaker William Penn, Philadelphia has played a central role in the development of American history and culture. Though while overshadowed in the popular mind by its neighbors, it remains home to pivotal strains of architectural thought and practice, both new and old. From its importance as a revolutionary center and the first Capital of the United States to its significance as a major manufacturing center through the 19th and 20th century, it’s time to explore the City of Brotherly Love and the long influence it has exerted on American and international building.
Join New York Adventure Club for a three-part series on the history of Philadelphia architecture, where we'll examine the buildings and structures that have made Philadelphia unique in its influence on American and international cities. In Part Two — City of Eclecticism — we'll explore the development of Philadelphia’s architecture as it rose to new prominence as a major manufacturing center.
Led by architectural historian David V. Griffin of Landmark Branding, this digital showcase featuring a selection of unique structures will include:
- An overview of the new eclecticism of Philadelphia’s architecture
- A close look at the major buildings and structures during the 1876 Centennial Exhibition
- The work of Frank Furness and his contemporaries and how they began to develop an aggressive new style of Gothic architecture
- The coming of the Beaux Arts movement
- The development of Philadelphia’s working-class row house neighborhoods and its garden suburbs
- An in-depth look at each building's construction, context, and current status, with a focus on how culture and innovation drive architectural symbolism
Afterward, we'll have a Q&A with David — any and all questions about these unique buildings are welcomed and encouraged!
