Since its founding in 1682 by the Quaker William Penn, Philadelphia has played a central role in the development of American history and culture. Though while overshadowed in the popular mind by its neighbors, it remains home to pivotal strains of architectural thought and practice, both new and old. From its importance as a revolutionary center and the first Capital of the United States to its significance as a major manufacturing center through the 19th and 20th century, it’s time to explore the City of Brotherly Love and the long influence it has exerted on American and international building.
Join New York Adventure Club for a three-part series on the history of Philadelphia architecture, where we'll examine the buildings and structures that have made Philadelphia unique in its influence on American and international cities. In Part One — Greene Country Towne — we'll explore the development of Philadelphia’s architecture from its colonial origin to its Classical and Romantic Revival phase in the early 19th century.
Led by architectural historian David V. Griffin of Landmark Branding, this digital showcase featuring a selection of unique structures will include:
- A brief overview of the earliest colonial dwellings in Philadelphia
- A close look at the major buildings and structures during the height of the Georgian Period
- The upheavals of the American Revolution and how the city's architecture and social fabric began to change
- The work of architects Henry Latrobe and William Strickland and their development of a new and monumental interpretation of the Greek Revival
- Examples of Philadelphia’s famous row houses
- The Early Romantic styles and how architects brought brownstone to Philadelphia
- An in-depth look at each building's construction, context, and current status, with a focus on how culture and innovation drive architectural symbolism
Afterward, we'll have a Q&A with David — any and all questions about these unique buildings are welcomed and encouraged!
