Event Details

Phenomenal Women of Power Breakfast recognizes the accomplishments of women across various professions who shape modern life. The breakfast offers women the chance to discuss major issues that impact their personal and professional advancement. Phenomenal Women of Power Breakfast provides an excellent opportunity to network with other phenomenal women from the northeast region in an educationally stimulating setting.

The breakfast benefits the Dr. Melvin I. Douglass Scholarship for Urban Education at MCNY.  The fund is the first at MCNY dedicated to students in the Masters of Science in Education program, and the first fund established by an African American man at the College. MCNY’s Masters of Science in Education is a one-year intensive program that certifies teachers for positions in New York City schools in grades K-6 in both early childhood and special education. Since establishing the master’s program in 2004, teachers from diverse low-income neighborhoods across New York City have been trained and certified. The Dr. Melvin Isadore Douglass Scholarship for Urban Education will emulate Dr. Douglass’ vision and commitment to enhancing the skills and practice of inner city teachers who work to improve the educational and socio-economic status of inner city students. Dr. Douglass believes that a teacher’s teacher ability is elemental to student success. He says: “Schooling is the foundation from which a healthy sustainable community is built and teachers are an instrumental factor.” Therefore, the scholarship will be awarded to an inner city teacher who has demonstrated scholarship and community service.

Metropolitan College of New York

Metropolitan College of New York (MCNY) is one of the only four-year non-profit colleges in the city that enables low-income students to work full-time while pursuing their degree year round and full-time.  MCNY believes that students learn best when they apply what they learn in the classroom directly to challenges in their workplace or community.  MCNY was founded in 1964 by Audrey Cohen, an educational visionary and activist. At that time it was called The Women’s Talent Corps. Through development and training for new professional positions, the Talent Corps created employment for thousands of people. It became The College for Human Services, later Audrey Cohen College, and today is MCNY.
