About this event
Le Petit Pont: Life and Work by the Androscoggin led by Candace Kanes
Beginning in the parking lot of what is now known as Fort Andross, we will imagine the streets and buildings that were once home to its many employees when the building produced cotton fabric and was known as the Cabot Mill. We will continue the imagining as we walk (very carefully) along Mill Street to Le Petit Pont, the structure we now call the Swinging Bridge to explore its history and its relationship to the mill, mill workers and the community on the west end of the bridge, Topsham Heights. We will cross the bridge to Topsham Heights. While there is still much to look at, we will have to use our imaginations to see the area as it was when the bridge was built in 1892 and the several decades after. For those who wish to do so, we can continue the walk along the paved path by the Androscoggin that will connect us to Main Street in Topsham and the Green Bridge to return to Fort Andross.
Starting point is in Fort Andross parking lot.
Participants meet at starting point; driving directions and parking information provided upon registration. Please check-in with tour leader at least 10 minutes prior to tour time.
Tours are limited to 20 unless otherwise noted. PHC maintains a waiting list for each tour in case of cancellations. Most tours are 75-90 minutes, though tours outside of downtown may go slightly longer. Please dress accordingly for the weather and wear sturdy shoes, sunblock, and/or bug spray as needed.
TICKET SALES END AT 3:30 THE DAY BEFORE THE TOUR. If a tour is sold out, you may add your information to the waitlist and we will contact you if a ticket becomes available.
