Description

Project Based Learning Approach to Civics Engagement Series

Series Overview: Research in civics education refers to instructional strategies that promote democratic ways of thinking that foster informed and active citizenship. It also establishes that citizenship education should be student-centered with a strong emphasis on classroom discussion and cooperative activities.

One approach that increases student interaction and enables students to engage with relevant issues is Project Based Learning (PBL). In this four-part series, the LAC will introduce participants to the PBL approach to develop relevant civics curricula. We will look at real issues our students face and develop tools for self-advocacy. Throughout the series, we will include lesson ideas that can be used with students at varying levels of proficiency. We will also explore how specific technology tools can be integrated into civics instruction. Finally, coaching sessions will be offered to participants to assist them in building their projects.

Attendance Restrictions: Attendees must commit to attending all four days of the series.

Sessions: February 8th, February 15th, March 8th, and April 26th

Audience: ESOL, ABE, and Pre-HSE Instructors

Facilitators: Nell Eckersley and Lizelena Iglesias

Session 4: Advocating for Change

Description: In the last session, teachers will share what they have learned through their projects. Now what? How can your students continue their civic engagement? We will review several social media tools and how they can be used for advocacy. Participants’ projects from this series will be uploaded in our digital resource center.
