Description

It’s never too late to learn! Here at the Connecticut Humane Society, we are always striving to learn about the latest best practices and advancements in the field of companion animal welfare. And we want to share that knowledge with you! From animal behavior to zoonotic diseases, each monthly seminar brings in a new topic and guest speaker. Please join us at our next PETtalk workshop on Thursday, May 23rd, at 6:30 PM, titled “Understanding Coyotes and Ways to Resolve Conflicts” featuring wildlife ecologist, Laura Simon.

About the Workshop:
Coyotes are becoming an increasingly common sight in the suburban landscape, yet public fears and conflicts are on the rise in many Connecticut communities. Towns are under increasing pressure to “do something” about this perceived threat to people’s pets and families. This program will provide much insight about coyotes, their origin and behavior, and explain the kinds of techniques that can change problematic behaviors and help residents co-exist with this wild canid who now ranges throughout the entire continental US.

About Our Guest Speaker:
Our speaker, Laura Simon, is the President of the Connecticut Wildlife Rehabilitators Association. Previously, she worked as the wildlife ecologist for the Humane Society of the United States. Laura ran a wildlife hotline for 18 years to assist the public and municipalities with ways to resolve a variety of wildlife issues, and trained animal control officers, police and rehabilitators around the country on phone advising methods. She has served on the Connecticut Rabies Advisory Commitee and worked with state agencies to create a rabies vector species rehabilitation program and training manual that served as a model for other states. Laura's special expertise with skunks led to a recent appearance on the Ellen DeGeneres Show. She received a Master's Degree in Environmental Management from the Yale School of Forestry and Environmental Studies.
