Description

About Integrated Pest Management

Students spend, on average, 30 hours per week in school areas such as classrooms, sports fields, gymnasiums and auditoriums. A school environment with pest and pesticide hazards can have detrimental short- and long-term effects on the health and safety of students and staff. Integrated Pest Management (IPM) in schools can improve environmental safety, health standards and educational outcomes. It is advocated for by the United States Department of Agriculture, United States Environmental Protection Agency, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), the American Academy of Pediatrics and others.

IPM has proven to be an effective and cost-efficient strategy for pest management. School districts using IPM have reported reductions in pesticide applications by 71% and pest complaints by 78% when compared to conventional pest management.

About the Training

Pest Defense for Healthy Schools: Professional Development Training for School Staff

Pests are not acceptable in school environments! Cockroaches, mice and dust mites cause and trigger asthma and allergies, and other public health pests such as bed bugs, head lice and stinging insects distract from meeting learning objectives in schools and childcare facilities.

Learn how to identify and effectively manage pests while minimizing pesticide and pest management hazards. Professionals working in schools will learn essential information to keep pests from interfering with healthy school and childcare environments. Read more about the modules offered at this training here.
