Personal Finance: Interdisciplinary Budgeting - Interintellect Salon
Event Information
About this Event
When most of us think about budgeting, we think about sitting in front of a computer or at a desk. And while it’s true that numbers have to be crunched at some point, in some way, budgeting is a whole-life exercise. Join fellow Interintellect Daniel Golliher in this concluding salon of his personal finance series.
Just as virtue is something that’s practiced every day across various domains (as Aristotle would have it, anyway), so is financial wisdom. Before your food spending can diminish, you must learn the skill of preparing delicious food. Before you get rid of your car, you must acclimate yourself to using your own physical motive power to go from place to place. And before cutting out cable, you must learn to dedicate your mind to other and different things.
But managing money is not an exercise in privation. It is one of the finest arts of personal transformation:
“Start by getting rid of your Debt Emergency if you have one. Live close to work. Move to another city if you enjoy adventure. Don’t borrow money for cars, and don’t buy stupid ones. Ride a bike wherever you can. Cancel your TV service. Stop wasting money on groceries. Give your kids the opportunity to achieve greatness without being pampered. Lose the overpriced cell phones. Learn to appreciate the life-boosting joy of using your own body to get things done. Learn to mock convenience. Practice optimism.” --Mr. Money Mustache (one of the best personal finance blogs you'll ever find)
In this salon we will approach personal finance not as a mathematical exercise, but as a whole philosophy of life.
