Personal Ethnographies: D'Angelo Madsen Minax

D’Angelo Madsen Minax’s videos survey the landscapes of contemporary Middle America from a rust-covered factory in To Summon and Chase Away, to a dry-rotted livestock farm in My Most Handsome Monster, to the streets and waterways of Memphis, TN in The Eddies, to the artist’s Michigan hometown in At the River. Lingering over sites of rural and post-industrial decay, Minax works in layers of voice-over, on-screen text, and archival footage to open up the passages of memory, history, and the social and personal longing these spaces both contain and conceal. At the same time, gestural, embodied sequences register sensations of light, color, touch, and taste, as they deconstruct performances of erotic and sexual play. Minax weaves these exterior and interior modes of cinema to suggest the permeability of the boundary between desire and refusal.

D’Angelo Madsen Minax will present and discuss his work.
