Not sure what a personal essay is? Well, here’s a hint: we create dozens of personal essays every day. We tell our family about our day over dinner, we send an email to a friend about how we’re feeling, we text our boss about why we’re running late.

The personal essay is literature’s often overlooked and misunderstood child — it’s not as big and flashy as the novel or as complicated and artsy as the poem. Despite the dismissive attitude some academics have for the personal essay, the form is one of the most ancient and pervasive genres of literature. We see personal essays everywhere, from magazines to cookbooks to our own text history.

But what makes a good essay work? How can the writer turn a hum-drum blow-by-blow of her day into something that jumps off the page—and how can she use that essay to help her make sense of herself?

This two-week workshop will dig deep into the craft of essay writing and unpack the tips and tricks used by some of the best essayists. We’ll get under the hood of historical and contemporary essays and see how the form has changed over time, applying those lessons to our own work. Join us and learn how a good essay can change you as a writer.
