Event description

Description

Regardless of who we are, we all know how alienating it can feel to walk into a setting where others we deem "like us" are nowhere to be found, or where there clearly seems to be a "lack of representation". Regardless of our age, race, gender, body size, ability, or even clothing style, we all experience feeling left out at some point or another.

What exactly makes this experience so challenging, and what motivates us to seek out spaces and create environments that help us feel less isolated? In this talk, I'll dissect how the composition of people in space can be meaningful to us, and why it is so hard to truly create diverse environments, especially in the unique subculture of tech.

Perry Eising (they or he pronouns) is a mission to make tech more inclusive and accessible. Formerly a full-time instructor at a leading Portland code school, Perry has spent ample time both in tech as a developer and PM, and out of tech in academia and working with students at PCC, PSU and Reed College. A queer, non-binary, first-generation college student and self-taught developer, Perry's interests extend out from tech into humanities, social science, art, and other fields of study. Perry enjoys niches, mutts, thrifting, electronic music, social time, and solo travel, ideally with a backpack or a bicycle.

Zapproved is an inclusive, equitable, and diverse workplace. Gender neutral bathrooms available.

Light appetizers will be provided by our friends at Simple but please feel free to bring your own lunch.
