Darren Doherty is internationally recognized as a leader and pioneer in permaculture and regenerative agriculture! The format of this course combines Darren's teaching on each specific topic, with a live walk through of how to run an effective consultation with real clients. Each day will yield specific design ideas for the site while giving specific techniques on how to choose the least cost for most economic and ecological gain next steps to move the land and farm objectives forward. Don't miss this opprotunity to learn from the best!
Aug 9: Drought-Proofing Land and Farms in California
Darren will use the 350 acres of the MA Center land to help determine the most economically viable drought-proofing 'next-steps' that the center can take. So often, permaculture designers fixate on the big pond or the installations of swales, when the best immediate choices for water catchment can be something less dramatic and more effective. We will explore how to choose and present both big picture and immediate strategies to clients to drought-proof their land.
Aug 10: Reforestation for Profit
Planting trees is often looked at as a charitable act for future generations. For many land owners and farmers it is very difficult to budget tree establishment and care with just a vague promiss of a more healthy ecosystem. Darren will advise on specific strategies to plant trees that are also short and long term enterprises designed to serve ecological function while bringing in capital through lumber, fence posts, animal feed, and other yields.
Aug 11: From Orchard to Stacked Enterprise
Greenfriends Farm has been exploring the edge between market orchard and food forest for many years. The food forest is often created as a forage based system which can make it very diffult to manage in a market orchard situation. Darren will bring decades of experience in stacked enterprise perennial agriculture to help make design choices that will keep fruit yields high, create easier management, integrate animals for fertility and weed management and diversify the products and yields.
$130/Day BEFORE JULY 1. ($150/Day AFTER July 1)
Aug 12-16: Implementation Intensive
After Darren's consulatation, we will be opening up a 5-day follow up to the course for up to 10 people who we will work with Michael Flynn, David Cody, the GreenFriends Farm team, and local teachers to take the suggestions into action on the ground. For permaculture designers, the experience of negotiating the details on the ground that follow the design is what sets apart theoretical designers from designers whose suggestions yield real change on farms and landscapes. We will be joined by special guests on site and via skype to discuss some of the evolving designs and implementation strategies. Tuition covers accomodations, breakfast, dinner, and guided team work on the ground.
