SCHOOL OF CONTINUING AND PROFESSIONAL STUDIES PERFUMERY WORKSHOP
Renowned perfumers, Raymond Matts and Alexis Karl will give a perfumery workshop at Pratt Institute Manhattan Center.
Raymond Matts, lead instructor of the Cinquieme Sens Advanced Perfumery Certificate Program at Pratt Institute School of Continuing and Professional Studies, possesses a wealth of professional experience in all aspects of the global fragrance business. During the course of his career in the perfume industry he has held key roles in the strategic development of many prestigious brands, including Aramis, Tommy Hilfiger, Clinique and Origins. Currently, Mr. Matts designs his own line of fragrances under the eponymous Raymond Matts Collection Aura de Parfum label.
This engaging hands-on workshop will introduce the participants to the professional perfumer’s palette and discuss how fragrances are created from fundamental ingredients, natural and synthetic. Also included will be a primer on the essential olfactive vocabulary used by perfumers.
Mr. Matts’ presentation includes an overview of the two required courses in the Advanced Perfumery Certificate program, 'The Technique and Language of Perfumery' and topics in ‘Advanced Perfumery.’ His lecture will broadly touch on a number of practical, scientific, and historical topics including fragrance history, the physiological aspects of one’s sense of smell, the role of the fragrance house in relation to the finished goods supplier, clarifying the roles of International Fragrance Association, the various formats for extracting naturals, and defining naturals, synthetics, and reconstitutions.
Alexis Karl, international multi media artist and artisanal perfumer will present a selection of topics covered in her SCPS Perfumery program elective: ‘Art & Scents’, a course that traces the art historical inspirations for fragrance creation.
Ms. Karl is founder and perfumer of Scent By Alexis and co-founder and perfumer of House of Cherry Bomb. Her fragrance work has been both exhibited as art, and sold as perfume nationally and internationally. Karl is a regular lecturer on fragrance, fashion and art at the Metropolitan Museum of Art and The Morbid Anatomy Museum, where she holds the post of House Perfumer. In 2015 , Ms. Karl was a finalist in the Art and Olfaction Awards.
Following the presentations, participants will have an opportunity to ask the speakers questions.
