Performing Spaces 2020 is pleased to present the Southeast Asian premiere of Maria Hassabi’s TOGETHER (2019). Conceived as an artistic programme offering unexpected encounters in the public space, this intimate duet slowly unfolds in the adjoining passage of the two historical wings of the National Gallery Singapore. Two bodies move carefully from one gesture to the next, echoing the architectural union between the former City Hall and Supreme Court.

TOGETHER will be performed by artist and choreographer Maria Hassabi alongside performer Oisín Monaghan. It is an intimate duet oscillating between dance and sculpture, where the two performers embrace and disentangle, always moving at the limits of perception, folding the surrounding space against the contours of the body. TOGETHER proposes a choreographic meditation on methods of affecting and being affected by each other; on ways of living with and next to one another. Unique to this iteration of TOGETHER is the engagement of children as a prelude to the performance.

Performances are scheduled to take place on Fri, 27 Mar 2020, 7.30pm and Sat, 28 Mar 2020, 3pm at the National Gallery Singapore’s Padang Atrium, followed by an artist talk between Maria Hassabi and Vanini Belarmino, Assistant Director (Programmes) on Sat, 28 Mar 2020, 5pm at the Ngee Ann Kongsi Auditorium Foyer.

TOGETHER was originally commissioned by the Pulitzer Arts Foundation, St Louis in 2019 with the support of Extended Life, a programme of the Lower Manhattan Council.
