In recent years, applications of warm mix asphalt (WMA) technologies and reclaimed asphalt pavement (RAP)
have become increasingly popular because of their economic and environmental benefits. However, because of
the lack of proper specifications, paving industries often design WMAs using the specifications that were developed
for hot mix asphalt (HMA). To address the aforementioned concern, the University of Oklahoma (OU), ODOT and SPTC took an initiative to develop a special provision for designing foamed-based WMA especially when the mixture contains RAP. In order to achieve this goal, a series of laboratory tests were conducted on laboratory and plant-produced foamed-WMA and HMA mixes, in addition to testing of field cores. This workshop will discuss the results of this ongoing study, specifically on the following aspects: (a) mix design issues for the WMA; and (b) performance difference of HMA and WMA mixes produced using the HMA mix design procedure; and (iii) WMA produced using a modified procedure intended for adopting in the WMA mix design special provision.
