Join Greenbelt Alliance on a nature hike up Pine Canyon to view Castle Rock, nesting site of the world's fastest bird, the Peregrine Falcon.
Once on the brink of extinction, Peregrines were reintroduced to the Castle Rock area a few decades ago. Now, a pair is getting ready to nest in the dramatic sandstone pinnacles. Naturalist Staci Hobbet will describe the falcon's natural history, this year’s nesting site, and the many challenges the "wanderers" still face, and what is being done locally to assist them. Our hike up the Canyon follows a historic stage coach road and passes the enigmatic "China Wall" of Mount Diablo.
This is a moderate hike of five miles with several hundred feet in elevation gain.
