Culture Matters: 
Strategies for Identifying and Serving Diverse Children with ASD and Their Families



Presenter:  Cynthia L. Wilson, PhD

Cynthia L. Wilson, PhD, is a Professor in the Department of Exceptional Student Education at Florida Atlantic University.  Dr. Wilson specializes in teacher education, cultural and linguistic diversity issues in special education, and the development of collaborative partnerships with PK-schools.  She is principal investigator of Project I2: Intensive Intervention for Students with ASD who have Persistent and Severe Needs, funded by the U.S. Department of Education.  She is author/co-author of more than 40 publications and has presented her research at numerous conferences.  Her publications include: Leadership from the Ground Up: Effective Schooling in Traditionally Low Performing Schools (Information Age Publishing), Special Education and the Linguistically Diverse Student in (Fundamentals of Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages in K-12 Mainstream Classrooms (Kendall Hunt), and Overcoming Obstacles: African American Students with Disabilities Achieving Academic Success (The Journal of Negro Education).  Dr. Wilson has been the recipient of the FAU Faculty Mentor of the Year Award, Broward Faculty of the Year Award, and both the University and College of Education Award for Excellence and Innovation in Undergraduate Teaching. 

Training Description

Learn strategies for identifying and serving diverse children with ASD and their families.

Training Objectives:

At the conclusion of this presentation, participants will be able to:

1. dentify cultural factors that interfere with identifying and serving Black African American and Hispanic Children with ASD and their families

2. Explore strategies for identifying children from diverse backgrounds who demonstrate symptoms associated with ASD

3. Define the concept of cultural competence

4. Discuss the role of collaboration in fostering cultural sensitivity of teachers

5. Identify strategies for designing a culturally responsive classroom
