Description

The People’s Planning Academy is an exciting new program organized by the Department of Metropolitan Development in partnership with the Indianapolis Neighborhood Resource Center to build the planning capacity of neighborhood and community leaders across Marion County. It is a required training program for members of appointed township Citizen Advisory Committees and all other participants of the in-person mapping phase of the Marion County Land Use Plan update. The program is free and open to everyone.

Planning involves the complex intersection of many different aspects of a community: land use, infrastructure, environmental issues, existing resident desires, the supply and demand for certain types of real estate, and more. It also has implications that are not always easy to see: impacts on human and environmental health, a community’s tax base and ability to provide high-quality public services, the ability of a place to evolve and retain its value, and the ability of our residents to access housing, jobs, education, and health care.

The People’s Planning Academy will provide participants with a basic knowledge of planning principles as well as in-depth training on the Marion County Land Use Plan’s new land use classification system (the “Pattern Book”). While being developed for the Land Use Plan process, the Academy is something DMD hopes to continue with additional trainings to help empower residents to be stronger advocates for the places they care about.

Participants who complete the Academy program will be able to work alongside city planners in the mapping phase of the Land Use Plan, working to apply and refine the land use classification Pattern Book to neighborhoods and districts across Marion County. FAQs

Is registration required?
YES! Your registration is how we'll communicate with you as well as how we'll verify your participation if you desire to participate in the mapping phase of the Marion County Land Use Plan.

How do I get a copy of the materials?
We'll provide you digital copies of the Workbook, the Plan 2020 Bicentennial Agenda, the Land Use Plan Pattern Book, and any handouts that a guest speaker may bring.

How long do I have to watch the videos?
While the Channel 16 videos will only be played for a limited time, the online videos will be available permanently. As long as you complete all of the sessions prior to the start of the mapping phase of the plan, you'll be invited to participate in the land use plan stakeholder committee!

How do I participate in the group exercises that participants of the physical academy will do?
Those will be part of the videos, so you'll be able to see the activities. We'll also be holding several in-person sessions at locations around Marion County in early December where you'll have the opportunity to do a final exercise that ties together everything you've learned as well as an abbreviated crash-course in the Land Use Plan Pattern Book. These are not required, but strongly encouraged, and we'll announce a schedule later in November.

How can I contact the organizer with any questions?
Contact Jane Hughes, Community Engagement Specialist with the Department of Metropolitan Development, at jane.hughes@indy.gov or 317-327-5150.
