6:00 p.m. – 7:30 p.m. Session 1: (Contact Hours: 1.5) How Did We Get Here

This workshop will provide an overview of the current opioid epidemic. In 2017, more than 70,237 people died in the U.S. died as a result of unintentional drug overdoses. An historical perspective will be provided using national and state data. A range of contributing factors will be identified.

9:00 a.m. – 12:00 p.m. Session 2: (Contact Hours: 3.0) Medication-Assisted Treatment, Recovery Support Services and Naloxone

Medication-assisted treatment (MAT) is a best practice approach for individuals with opioid use disorders. This workshop will provide an overview of the three approved forms of MAT. It will include a description of addiction as a brain disease. The important role of recovery support services in complementing treatment services will also be discussed. Finally, this workshop will also explain how the opioid overdose reversal drug naloxone (aka Narcan) works.

1:00 p.m. – 2:30 p.m. Session 3: (Contact Hours: 1.5) Continuation of session 2

2:30 p.m. – 3:30 p.m. PSOC Membership Meeting

3:30 p.m. - 5:00 p.m. Free Time/Self-Care

5:00 p.m. – 6:00 p.m. Dinner

6:00 p.m. – 7:30 p.m. Session 4: (Contact Hours: 1.5) Children of Substance Abusers

Studies have indicated that children living with parents with substance use disorders are at greater risk for a range of problems that affect youth. This session will help participants understand the various roles assumed by these children within their families. It will also include a discussion of how to support these children by reinforcing healthy coping strategies.

A multi-faceted strategy is critical to combat the opioid health crisis. This workshop will identify the key components for an effective game plan. It will also identify several initiatives that seem to be having a positive impact.
