Event Details

In a world with legally-mandated protections and guarantees for the LGBT community, how do we ensure actual--rather than simply formal--equality? Discussions about LGBT equality generally focus on legislation, policy, and formal structures to accomplish that mission. However, as policymakers and industry leaders inch closer to developing such institutionalized equality, new questions arise: Will a legal infrastructure genuinely reduce discrimination and stigma? How can we create the necessary culture change in everyday life? What should we be considering to prepare for implementing new policies?

Join us for the first annual University of Pennsylvania Law School Lambda Law Symposium, “Beyond Formal Equality: The Fight for LGBT Rights.” The event will take place on February 1, 2012 from 10:30 AM - 7:00 PM. Panel discussions include:

Anti-Bullying and LGBT Youth
In a future where all American youth are protected in schools by policies that address bullying and harassment, what does that equality look and feel like?  What steps beyond the simple implementation of inclusive policies will ensure their success? Can they be successful at all?

Employment Discrimination
How can laws and policies prohibiting workplace discrimination be implemented to reduce subtler forms of bias, and will affirmative action policies be necessary to achieve genuine equality? What can we learn from the Lilly Ledbetter Fair Pay Act?

The Don’t Ask Don’t Tell Repeal: What More Is Needed?
How has the repeal affected LGB servicemen and women? What lessons can we take away from the implementation process there for other issues? In what ways must military policy grow and change in order to become more inclusive of the LGB community? What is being done to extend protections and support to transgender servicemen and women?

This program has been approved for 3.5 hours of substantive law credits and 2.0 hours of ethics credits for Pennsylvania lawyers.
