The Penn Global Surgery Group is excited to host the second annual Global Surgery Symposium on Friday, December 2nd, in Law Aud from 4:30-8:30pm, sponsored by the Agnew Surgical Society, the Center for Global Health, Penn Surgery, Penn Orthopaedics, Penn Anesthesia, and CHOP Orthopaedics.
This year's symposium will focus on how academic institutions can build sustainable surgical programs in developing countries. Our keynote speaker is Dr. Mark Shrime, an ENT surgeon who was centrally involved in the Lancet Commission, which declared, "surgery is an integral, indivisible component of a properly functioning health system, and all people should have access to safe, high-quality surgical and anesthesia care with financial protection when needed."
Other speakers include Drs. Mark Morgan (Gynecology Oncology), David Spiegel (Orthopedics), Georges Azzie (Surgery), Kassa Darge (Radiology), Joshua Atkins (Anesthesia), and Jesse Raiten (Anesthesia). Collectively, they represent a multi-disciplinary panel of physicians and surgeons from Penn Medicine and the Children's Hospital of Philadelphia with substantial involvement in research and development in global surgery.
