Event Details

Everything’s fine—and then it’s not. Cancer. Depression. Whether it be of the body or the mind, or you or a loved one, life as you know it is forever changed.

Tuesday, November 14 at 7pm, Pen Parentis Literary Salons brings together three authors—Michael Greenberg, Joanne Jacobson, and Diana Geffner-Ventura—who will present readings from their new works followed by a panel discussion moderated by Columbia University MFA alumnae Christina Chiu and M. M. De Voe in the prestigious downtown hotel. The reading series has recently won a Creative Engagement Grant from New York City and New York State, administered by the Lower Manhattan Cultural Council. Admission is free but RSVP is recommended via their website at

Michael Greenberg memoir, Hurry Down Sunshine, has been translated into eighteen languages and was named a best book of the year by Time Magazine. Joanne Jacobson’s book, Hunger Artist: A Suburban Childhood, captures her experience growing up Jewish in the suburbs of Chicago. Diana Geffner-Ventura is a journalist working on a memoir about her husband’s courageous battle with cancer.

In addition to being exceptionally diverse and talented, all of Pen Parentis' featured authors are also parents - expect intimate discussion of real-world truths, and how they affect us and future generations. These free, neighborhood Salons were founded to showcase the diverse variety of creative writing by authors who happen to also be parents. Since their first salon in January of 2009, Pen Parentis has presented more than 300 writers to the general public.

The night begins with networking over wine, compliments of Andaz Wall Street. Readings will be followed by intimate Q&A, and the event ends with mingling and book signings. All readers are welcome, 21+. Books will be vended for signings. Pen Parentis Literary Salons are a great place to meet book-loving neighbors as well as industry notables.

Pen Parentis

Pen Parentis is a federally recognized 501c3 New York Charity that provides critical resources to working writers to keep them on creative track after they start a family. We build and support in-person and online communities of authors who are also parents to encourage production of new, high-quality written work, and offer individual aid to writers whenever possible. We believe in extending our reach through partnerships with organizations who host activities that support creative writing and the arts.

We are headquartered in New York City but our reach is global through our networking website and social media channels, all of which feature unique parenting-and-writing resources.
