The upcoming Pen, Paper and Palate evening at The Half King will reflect on “War of the 20th/21st Centuries” from the unique perspective of our esteemed panelists, including:

Major Scott A. Huesing

Sam Kleiner

Colonel Doug Mastriano

Craig L. Symonds

Moderating the discussion will be Patrick McGrath.

Irish poet Micheal O'Siadhail will begin the evening with a reading from his collection of poems entitled, The Gossamer Wall.

Books will be available for purchase at the event and the evening will close with book signings.


ABOUT THE MODERATOR

Patrick McGrath is the author of nine novels and three collections of short stories. His most recent book, The Wardrobe Mistress, involved the resurgence of the fascist movement in Britain in 1946. It was shortlisted for the Walter Scott Prize for Historical Fiction. Published widely in translation, he is a Fellow of the Royal Society of Literature, and recently received an honorary doctorate from the University of Stirling. He is currently at work on a novel about the Spanish Civil War and teaches in the writing program of the New School University.

ABOUT THE AUTHORS

Scott A. Huesing is a retired United States Marine Corp infantry major with over twenty-four years of service, spanning ten deployments and conducting operations in over sixty countries worldwide. His new book, Echo in Ramadi: The Firsthand Story of U.S. Marines in Iraq’s Deadliest City, chronicles his and his men’s experiences in Iraq, where he commanded the Echo Company, 2d Battalion, 4th Marines as part of Operation Iraqi Freedom. Huesing currently serves as the executive director of Save the Brave, a nonprofit organization committed to supporting veterans struggling with post-traumatic stress.

Sam Kleiner is the author of the just released book, The Flying Tigers: The Untold Story of the American Pilots Who Waged a Secret War Against Japan. A historian and lawyer based in New York City, Kleiner was raised in Tucson, Arizona and holds a BA from Northwestern University, a doctorate in international relations from the University of Oxford, where he was a Marshall Scholar, and a JD from Yale Law School. His writing has appeared in the Los Angeles Times, Foreign Policy, and The Atlantic.

Doug Mastriano, a combat veteran, foreign policy expert and historian, is the author of the new book, Thunder in the Argonne, the first to tell the complete story of America’s largest battle, the 1918 Meuse-Argonne Campaign. Commissioned in the U.S. Army in 1986, Mastriano has served in West Germany, Iraq and Afghanistan; worked with NATO for four years and led seven relief operations to help Afghan orphans. He has published 20 articles on strategy and historic topics. He retired from the U.S. Army in 2017 and was a a candidate for Pennsylvania's 13th U.S. Congressional District in 2018.

Craig L. Symonds is the Ernest J. King Chair of Maritime History at the U.S. Naval War College in Newport, Rhode Island, and Professor Emeritus at the U.S. Naval Academy where he taught for thirty years and served as Department Chair. He is the author or editor of twenty-nine books, including Decision at Sea (2005), Lincoln and His Admirals (2008), The Battle of Midway (2011), Neptune: The Allied Invasion of Europe and the D-Day Landings (2014), and World War II at Sea (2018) all with Oxford University Press.

Micheal O’Siadhail is a poet. His latest book The Five Quintets was published by Baylor University Press in 2018. Among his other books are Collected Poems (Bloodaxe 2013, Baylor University Press 2018), and One Crimson Thread (Bloodaxe 2015, Baylor University Press 2017). He lives in New York.
