Event description
Peggy Orenstein and Judy Campbell discuss Orenstein's highly anticipated new book, Boys & Sex

About this Event

Mrs. Dalloway's Bookstore and the East Bay School for Boys are thrilled to welcome Peggy Orenstein and Judy Campbell, discussing Orenstein's new book, Boys & Sex: Young Men on Hookups, Love, Porn, Consent and Navigating the New Masculinity.

Drawing on comprehensive interviews with young men, psychologists, academics, and experts in the field, Boys & Sex reveals how young men understand and negotiate the new rules of physical and emotional intimacy. Orenstein dissects so-called locker room talk; how the word "hilarious" robs boys of empathy; pornography as the new sex education; boys' understanding of hookup culture and consent; and their experience as both victims and perpetrators of sexual violence. By surfacing young men's experience in all its complexity, Orenstein is able to unravel the hidden truths, hard lessons, and important realities of young male sexuality in today's world. The result is a provocative and paradigm-shifting work that offers a much-needed vision of how boys can truly move forward as better men.

Peggy Orenstein is the New York Times bestselling author of Cinderella Ate My Daughter, Waiting for Daisy, Flux, and Schoolgirls. A contributing writer for the New York Times Magazine, she has been published in USA Today, Parenting, Salon, the New Yorker, and other publications.

Judy Campbell is a producer for Forum, KQED's daily live call-in radio program, and occasionally fills in as host. She is also the co-host and co-producer of the KQED podcast The Leap. Her work regularly appears on NPR and has been recognized with awards from the Public Radio News Directors, Inc., and the National Association of Community Broadcasters.

This event is a co-production of Mrs. Dalloway's Bookstore and East Bay School for Boys, an independent middle school empowering boys to cultivate their intellectual, physical, and emotional selves to become the engaged, thoughtful, and courageous men of tomorrow.

Doors to the event will open at 6:30 PM. Following Orenstein and Campbell's conversation, there will be a question and answer period followed by a book signing.
