Event description

Description

In partnership with the Virginia Department of Behavioral Health and Developmental Services and our local hosts, VOCAL invites you to join us!

This Peer Support Whole Health and Resiliency (PSWHR) training will be held in the Harrisonburg area on Tuesday, February 12th and Wednesday, February 13th, from 9am-5pm. This training will be facilitated by Bonnie Neighbour.

PSWHR is a training program designed to be taught to Peer Recovery Specialists who are in position to then teach it to their Peers, in individual or group settings. This approach is based on the belief that people with a chronic illness, who are working to manage that condition and improve their overall health, are more effective in getting another person with similar experiences to make life-style changes than trained clinicians.

The PSWHR support group model is an eight session program, which will be taught to Peers over the two days of this February training. In the first six sessions the Peers will learn and discuss the fundamentals of the curriculum. The last two sessions are used to train the Peer Specialists to teach the material and to create an action plan for implementing the program in their own lives. Once the Peer Recovery Specialists have been through the PSWHR training, they are free to adapt the material to their local situation.

Participants will leave the training with:

  • The Core Beliefs of Peer Support Whole Health and Resiliency
  • Understanding of the Domains of Whole Health
  • Identification of the 5 Keys to Success
  • Knowing how to create person-centered planning goals using IMPACT criteria
  • PSWHR Tools to use immediately with peers

To learn more about the program curriculum, view the Appalachian Consulting Group's website here.

Continuing Education Units (CEUs) will be available.

Boxed lunches will be available for $9 per day and will be delivered to the site. If you are interested in ordering your meals this way, please select your preferred sandwich/salad on the registration form and bring your payment to the training. Orders will be placed 24 hours in advance and VOCAL will need to invoice folks who order lunches, but do not show up to the training. We will have a 1 hour break during the training if you choose to provide lunch in a different way. Assorted drinks will be available.

Free access had been made possible by DBHDS
