Event description
The 4-H Rabbit Project provides youth a fun, hands-on learning experience that develops life skill and teaches valuable information.

About this Event

The project is open to 4-H members ages 5-18 who reside in one of the counties located in the Pee Dee Region. Each project participant will have the opportunity to participate in the Pee Dee Region as well as 4-H sanctioned rabbit project shows. Date and locations of shows will be shared as they become available.

For 2020, it is the responsibility of the youth and his/her family to secure a rabbit for the project. It does not matter what breed of rabbit you select. If you need assistance locating a rabbit, contact your local 4-H Extension Agent. You must be registered by May 31, 2020 in order to be eligible for project awards.

The registration fee of $15 to participate in the project includes:

Free participation in the regional rabbit clinic that will be held June 20 in the Florence area

Access to Rabbit Record Book on caring for and raising rabbits into healthy adult rabbits

Opportunity to participate in a regional rabbit show

Rabbit Project FAQs

1. What is the sibling rule for the Rabbit Project?

a. A rabbit can only be registered to be shown by two 4-Hers if the family only owns one rabbit. The 4-Hers MUST be in separate age groups. A “sibling rule” rabbit can be shown in up to two showmanship classes and one breed class per show.

2. If I miss the project deadline can I still participate in the project events?

a. If you miss the May 31, 2020 deadline you are still eligible to participate in shows and clinics (possibly at an additional cost) if you are a current 4-H member. You can still complete a record book and receive feedback but you will not be eligible for year-end awards.

3. What is a 4-H Sanctioned Show?

a. A 4-H sanctioned show is a show that is put on my a 4-H county program, club or volunteers that follows all of the following guidelines:

i. Uses the following 4-H age breakdowns:

1. Cloverbud (ages 5-8)

2. Cloverleaf (ages 9-10)

3. Junior (ages 11-13)

4. Senior (ages 14-19)

5. Classes can be combined if a show deems that registration numbers are too low

ii. Cloverbud classes are considered a non-competitive division but participants will still receive feedback.

iii. Require youth to show only the rabbits that they have declared as their project animals on the project’s animal identification form. Project animals must be declared to the project no less than 10 days before the first show they plan to exhibit their animals at.

iv. Will use the SC 4-H Rabbit Project Showmanship Scoresheet or the ARBA Showmanship Scoresheet.

4. What are the reporting dates for the record book? You may include any activities or events during the 2020 calendar year in your record book.
