Early Rider / Intermediate Rider: Handling / Control / Group Riding Etiquette Class

Half Day Summer Camp: Ages 5-13

If you have any doubts about your child’s riding ability, this is an excellent class.

This class includes riders of mixed riding ability; it is not a learn to pedal camp (click here for Learn to Pedal). Our focus is further developing the necessary skills the kids need when riding. We have a variety of drills and courses along with adaptive techniques that build excellent handling and control of the bicycle. Having situational awareness and control are the primary safety mechanisms to prevent accidents. Class operates in a safe, enclosed parking lot as a learning environment, but we use this setting to create a variety of courses with a variety of drills and adaptive techniques so children can practice a wide range of skills safely based on the child's individual abilities. It's fun and we cover a lot. It is focused time spent riding that develops a skilled rider. In previous classes, we have tracked distances and found that some ride up to 50 miles during the camp week. Learning to ride and navigating around other riders on closed courses increases teamwork, control, handling, and awareness. These skills needed to ride in the real world. Riding off-site is not the focus of this class, but depending on the group we do occasionally take a group ride towards the end of the week to practice what we have learned.

Our goal of these classes is for kids to be able to handle and control their bicycles in a group environment (whether with family or other kids). Your child may or may not be ready to move up to the next level of Pedaling Minds classes after completing this one. We have had kids repeat this course three times because the sessions are fun and are progressive, depending on where the child starts at the beginning of the week.

In this camp, we welcome riders aged 5-13 who know

Early Rider Prerequisites:

  • Can pedal -- not new to pedaling

  • Ability to stop -- whether on command or struggling to stop, but have an understanding how to stop. We meet the kids at their level with individual drills.

Intermediate Rider General Prerequisites: This camp is also designed for those who know how to pedal and are on their way to becoming confident bike riders, but need situational control, navigating tight turns, riding while making a hand signal, practice riding with others in a tight group, safety knowledge. These are kids who ride on occasion or often but need further practice - tight turns, changing gears,  single file riding, emergency braking, accelerating, navigating descents, and so on.

Pedaling Minds is a 501 c3 founded by 2008 Olympian, Mike Friedman. Over the last five years, over 1100 kids have come through the program, all of which learned to ride or became safer and better riders. Through afterschool programs, summer camps, private camps, and weekend clinics and assemblies we help teach and strengthen the life-long activity of riding a bicycle.

  • Mike spent 20 years racing bicycles 10 of those professionally. On the road he’s raced Paris Roubaix, Milan San Remo, Flanders amongst others while racing in 32 different countries. In 2008 he became an Olympian representing the United States.

  • Retiring in 2014, he founded a program for kids called Pedaling Minds, a 501c3, and teaches kids/adults how to ride bicycles in control.

  • Pedaling Minds also has a STEM Curriculum that teaches a multitude of sciences through the lens of a bicycle. Concepts in energy conservation, water conservation, rocketry, electrolysis, mechanics,  physics, health and more.

  • The program is very active within the Boulder Valley community and has worked in the past within BVSD Life Long Learning and now operates their own summer camps, after-school programs, private lessons and weekend Clinics.
