Pedagogical Orientation: Classroom Management
Wed, May 3, 2017, 9:00 AM – 4:00 PM SAST
Private Higher Education Institutions (PHEIs) are faced with a unique dilemma in that they need to remain on the cutting edge of knowledge trasferrence with regard to their area of subject expertise (Arts, design, commerce, humanities, etc.); but also need to esure that they adhere to best practices in Teaching and Learning. What takes precedent then, ensuring that course content remains relevant and current; or ensuring the pedagogical practises employed remains effective? And, why do PHEIs need to choose?

In an ideal world, PHEIs would easily source lecturing staff with both current and industry-relevant knowledge in a particular field, and the means – i.e. be formally trained educators. This is, unfortunately, rarely the case, and in most instances PHEIS settle for individuals that are subject-specialists first, and educators second. This dilemma is particularly prevalent in niche areas, such as Art and Design, or subject areas that do not have a well-developed scholarly underpinning, such as Events management, Travel management, etc.
To add to the pressure faced by PHEIs, the regulators require proof that the institution not only identifies skills gaps in their lecturing staff but also provide a means to address these shortcomings through formal and informal professional development initiatives. Not only are most of the available initiatives costly to persue, they also require a full-time commitment from lecturing staff which translates into time away from campus.
