What is PECAN+?

PECAN+ CTF 2025 is a Capture The Flag cyber security competition for beginner, intermediate and advanced high school students in Years 10 to 12. Compete nationally to solve challenges in a range of topics areas including Cryptography, Digital Forensics, Linux, OSINT, Reverse Engineering, Steganography and Web Exploitation. We also offer a fun Training Day to support competitors in developing their skills in using cyber tools, virtual machines, Linux and in ethical hacking.

TAFE Queensland Locations:

South Bank Campus - 66 Ernest St, South Brisbane QLD 4101. Event held in G Block (near corner of Merivale and Ernest St).

Team and registration format:

Compete in Teams of up to four students. Please register a Team below and provide details for each Team member. If you are registering as an Individual you will be placed in a Team on the day.

PECAN+ is founded and led by Edith Cowan University in collaboration with Universities, TAFEs and the cyber security ecosystem around Australia. For more information see pecanplus.org.

Saturday 23rd August 2025 (Training Day) and Sunday 24th August, 2025 (Competition Day).

Saturday: 9.00am – 5pm

Sunday: 10.00am - 5pm

Event format:

Day 1, Training Day, plus Industry Guest Speakers in the morning

Day 2, Competition Day, plus National & State award ceremony in the afternoon

Beginner/Intermediate/Advanced, a general guide only:

• Beginner: No or limited experience with cyber tools to date. Looking forward to preparing and learning cyber tools in the lead up to the competition. No prior experience with CTF competitions.
• Intermediate: some knowledge of cyber tools and attempting practice CTF challenges.
• Advanced: Experienced in tacking CTFs and cyber challenges. May have competed in CTF competitions previously.

Note - If you are a minor you are expected to consult with a parent/legal guardian before registering, and to provide a parent/legal guardian’s details as an emergency contact.

FAST FACTS:

• PECAN+ is a Capture The Flag style of competition. Compete to solve cyber security challenges and correctly uncover a digital "flag" (string of text). Challenge categories include cryptography, OSINT, reverse engineering, steganography, exploitation and more.
• PECAN+ tests problem solving and teamwork, as well as cyber security and computing skills. Challenges range from Beginner through to Advanced, making this a competition for competitors at every skill level!
• National awards for Beginner, Intermediate and Advanced divisions, as well as Top All Female teams. There will be great prizes!
• PECAN+ CTF is a free event. Registration includes access to Training offerings as well as Competition Day.
• Register and compete in teams of up to four. Individual registrants can be placed into a team.
• Training Day and Competition Day are run in person at locations in every State/Territory.
