Event Details

In 2011, Pearson made a public commitment to efficacy. This commitment was an important stake in the ground: it was the company’s way of saying that when you use an education product you should have a clear picture of the learning outcomes you can expect, as well as an understanding of the results that others have had with that product in the past.

In real terms, Pearson’s commitment to efficacy has meant starting with learning products and services based on education research, developing a thorough understanding of how products are used, making iterative product improvements, and generating valid and reliable claims about product impacts on learner outcomes through evaluative studies.

Although Pearson’s commitment to efficacy spans all types of products and services, an ever-growing share is comprised of digital learning technologies. Understanding the efficacy of learning technologies brings its own challenges and opportunities. On the challenge side lies understanding, and accounting for, the variety of contexts in which a product might be implemented, given the profound effects that context has on impact. On the opportunity side lies the potential to use data to get “inside” learning in new and nuanced ways, which has the power to dramatically fast-forward our understanding of how people learn.

Please join Pearson and LearnLaunch on March 22nd for a panel discussion on building efficacy in learning technologies. During this session, we’ll discuss the first paper  in the Pearson | SRI Series on Building Efficacy in Learning Technologies entitled Volume 1. Understand, Implement & Evaluate authored by Barbara Means and her team at SRI International. As part of Pearson’s commitment to efficacy, we’re pleased that Barbara -- a leader in evaluating the implementation and efficacy of technology-supported educational innovations -- has led the work on this series as well as being a partner to Pearson in the evaluation of the impact of our products.

In this session participants will:

  • Understand the importance of the context in which a given learning technology is implemented

  • Find out about the kinds of efficacy research and impact evaluation that are happening at Pearson

  • Debate the pros and cons of RCTs and other evaluation alternatives in evaluating the impact of learning technologies

  • Hear from the lead author, Barbara Means, of the Pearson | SRI Series on Building Efficacy in Learning Technologies

  • Find out about how to engage with Pearson on their efficacy work

Confirmed Speakers
Barbara Means, Director, Center for Technology in Learning at SRI International
More to be announced shortly.
