Pearson Connected Math Program 3 (General Session 3)

This session is the third of four workshops designed for NYC teachers who are implementing Pearson’s Connected Math Program 3 (CMP3) this school year. All NYC teachers who are implementing this program this year are invited to attend. One additional session will take place during the 2013–14 school year; participants should plan to attend all four workshops to experience the year-long sequence.

Teachers participating in this series of general sessions will be supported in learning how to incorporate the shifts of the Common Core Learning Standards, with a focus on the intersections with the Connected Math Program 3 (CMP3) program. Over the course of the year, participants will learn strategies and best practices to support student learning through inquiry-based instruction. Through an analysis of student work, teachers will develop their skill in making instructional decisions within the CMP3 program. Participants will deepen their content knowledge, enabling them to more effectively implement CMP3.

Session 3: Developing Mathematical Discourse

As a result of this session, participants will:

· Understand what defines rich mathematical discourse and how that connects to the Standards for Mathematical Practice.

· Be able to formatively assess students using rich mathematical discourse.

· Be able to analyze student work to further develop strategies for promoting mathematical discourse in a variety of Investigations.

· Understand the importance of developing students’ mathematical language skills.

· Understand how to use effective questioning techniques to engage students in rich mathematical discourse.
