Peace & Hope: 1760ft of Art by 1000+ Syrian Refugee Children National Mall
Event Information
Description
Join thousands of people on the National Mall, October 23-27, 2014 for: 'Peace & Hope: A Gift From the Children of Syria to the World' art installation. The art exhibit is an apolitical cultural diplomacy exhibit aimed at educating the American public about the plight of Syrian children & youth.
Painted by 1,000+ children and youth in the Shakespeare Tent, Zaatari Refugee Camp in Jordan, Peace & Hope tells the story of Syrian children/youth impacted by over 3 years of conflict that has left millions displaced. Under the leadership of Syrian actor Nawar Bulbul, over the course of a few months, children and youth of all ages were invited to paint what "peace and hope" mean to them.
The art exhibit is over 1/3 miles long (536 meters - 1,760 feet) and weighs over 300 lbs (136 kilograms). The backdrop of the exhibit will be the US Capitol from one side, Washington Memorial from the other side, and directly in front of the Smithsonian National Gallery of Art.
The exhibit is supported by over 25 organizations including UNHCR and UN-Habitat. It will remain up during the Marine Corps Marathon and will feature a UNHCR tent to simulate life in a refugee camp, where the canvas was made.
The art installation is part of a larger public affairs initiative, #RestoreHappy. To learn more: www.restorehappy.org.
