Parkinson's Disease Caregiver Conference: Practical Skills

2) "Medication Management: Tools and Techniques for Complex Schedules" with Edyth Willard, PharmD, CGP, Pharmacist

3) "Safe Mobility Maintenance: Exercise and Equipment" with Eric Smith, PT, Physical Therapist

4) "Approaches to Good Self Care: Avoiding Burnout" with Karen Nibblett, PMHNP, CNS, Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner

5) "Equipment Demonstrations: Make Life Easier and Safer for You and Your Loved One" with Deborah Thomas, OT, Occupational Therapist

It is our desire to provide needed support for caregivers in a confidential group of peers, including an environment for sharing emotions.  Toward that goal, please join us in limiting conference attendance to family and friends who are caregivers.  Respite is available for those with PD.  Copies of the slides from the presentations will be available after the conference by calling PRO, 800.426.6806.

 

Speaker Bios:

 

Judy Simon, Speech Therapist

 Judy received her bachelor’s degree in Speech and Hearing Sciences and her Master’s Degree in Speech Language Pathology from Portland State University. She has worked with people with Parkinson’s Disease throughout her career and for the last five years, working with a geriatric-focused population at ElderPlace. She has also worked in acute care, home health and long-term care. Judy is a musician who frequently incorporates music into her therapy sessions.

Meredith Kleinhenz, Registered Dietitian

Meredith is a registered dietitian whose work experience has spanned the lifecycle – from infants to the elderly. She has worked for Providence ElderPlace for nearly seven years and considers it an honor to be part of an interdisciplinary team that provides outstanding participant care.  Meredith graduated summa cum laude from the Coordinated Program in Dietetics at the University of Missouri-Columbia. After college, Meredith came to the Pacific Northwest for a year of volunteer service and has called Portland home ever since.

Karen Nibblett, Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner

Karen earned her undergraduate degree in Health Promotion and Exercise Science from Portland State University and worked in the health and fitness field for a decade before moving into nursing. She earned her graduate degree in Clinical Counseling from George Fox University and earned a double master’s degree from Oregon Health Sciences University. She is licensed as a Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner and also holds a license as a Certified Nurse Specialist in Gerontology. Karen also worked with WWII Veterans at the Portland Veterans Administration Hospital.

Deborah Thomas, Occupational Therapist

Deborah has almost 25 years of working in the rehabilitation field. She earned her bachelor’s degree from University of Massachusetts – Dartmouth and her master’s degree in occupational therapy from San Jose State University. Since that time, she has worked in acute, outpatient, home care and community settings, seeing patients with a variety of diagnoses. Deborah’s main area of interest is and expertise is safety. She provides home assessments then recommends treatments and/or home safety modifications to support people with neurological, orthopedic and other diseases.

Edyth Willard, Pharmacist

Edyth is a clinical pharmacist with Providence ElderPlace. She earned her bachelor's degree in Pharmacy from Oregon State University, and doctorate degree in Pharmacy from the University of Florida.  She has a certification in Geriatric Pharmacy.  She specializes in working with the geriatric population and has more than 20 years of experience. Edyth has extensive knowledge, experience and interest in working with Parkinson’s patients. She lectures to Parkinson’s support groups and the school of pharmacy on pharmacotherapy for patients with Parkinson’s Disease. Edyth works with many Parkinson’s patients and caregivers in her role as a pharmacist on the ElderPlace medical care team.

Eric Smith, Physical Therapist

Eric Smith has served as the Rehab Program manager for Providence Elderplace for the last 5 years.  A graduate of the Stanford University Physical Therapy program, he’s practiced in the state of Oregon, specializing in Home Health and the geriatric population for the past 33 years. He’s participated in advanced training with Neurology of Movement and Exercise researchers from OHSU, and has years of experience, and interest in working with Parkinson’s patients, their families and caregivers, as well.
