Half-and-Half Course

The PCSS Half-and-Half waiver training course provides an overview of the FDA-approved medication buprenorphine prescribed for the treatment of opioid use disorder (OUD). The course meets the required 8-hour training to prescribe buprenorphine for the treatment of OUD. The course trainer will conduct an overview of prevention, identification, and treatment of substance use disorders emphasizing OUD.

The 8-hour waiver training is offered in a ‘half and half’ format: 4 hours of in-person training followed by 4 hours of online training through PCSS. Upon completion of the training, providers will meet the requirement of the DATA 2000 to apply for a waiver to prescribe buprenorphine.

Physicians are required to apply to the Drug Enforcement Agency for a waiver to prescribe buprenorphine, one of three medications approved by the FDA for the treatment of opioid use disorder. Advance Practice Registered Nurses (APRNs) and Physician Assistants (PAs) complete the standardized buprenorphine waiver 8-hour training as well as an additional 16 hours of online training as established by the Comprehensive Addiction and Recovery Act (CARA) which can be found here: https://pcssnow.org/medications-for-opioid-use-disorder/

Providers who want to treat more than 30 patients at any one time must complete the waiver training course.

Objectives

At the conclusion of this activity participants should be able to:

  • Review addiction treatment in office-based practices
  • Discuss the pharmacological treatments of opioid use disorder
  • Determine what medical record documentation must be followed
  • Discuss the process of buprenorphine induction as well as stabilization and maintenance techniques
  • Describe how to take a patient history and evaluation
  • Review safety concerns and drug interactions
