Event description

Description

The most popular and talked about workshop of 2017 is back for those who missed it or those who want to delve deeper.

This workshop will provide the grounding in theories of:

  • oppression,
  • privilege and power;
  • effective ways of recognising oppression within our groups;
  • and tools that equip groups to address it in our organising spaces.

Purpose: Our movement, which works for social justice in the broadest sense, suffers from re-inscribing and reinforcing the very structures of oppression it claims to challenge. We hear stories of racism and sexism that pervade groups which campaign for workers’ rights; and we are members of anti-racist groups which turn a blind eye to the oppression of women. While our oppressions are structural, our understandings of them are not, undermining the collective power of groups to work with differences, not against them.

Facilitator: TBC

Note: PCOC workshops are a safe space. This will be a challenging module, so it is vital that participants feel free to express ideas and ask questions in a constructive manner, and that this is met with an equally constructive manner.

“Community Organising is a process of building power through training and supporting leaders to activate their community, build effective teams and create solutions to identified problems. Strong personal relationships and motivational story telling are the foundation of community organising whilst the process of strategising and winning campaigns help strengthen and maintain community empowerment.”
