PBNYC Walking Tour: Sunset Park
Event Information
Description
Want to learn more about participatory budgeting? Join us for a walking tour of funded projects in diverse Sunset Park, Brooklyn.
In a time of rising civic engagement and frustration with politics, many leaders are using an innovative tool to build a more participatory and equitable democracy: Participatory budgeting (PB). PB is a democratic process that gives ordinary people direct control over a portion of a public budget. It empowers historically marginalized residents, engages them in finding solutions, and knits communities together. Leaders in more than 3,000 cities and governments have implemented PB. New York City’s PB process (PBNYC) is the largest in the country, engaging over 100,000 residents in allocating $40 million per year.
Join us for a tour of projects funded by PB in Sunset Park, an Asian and Latinx immigrant enclave. We’ll also visit PBNYC outreach sites to see how PB effectively engages diverse neighbors in meetings and voting, and learn about how PB has led to broader transformation within New York City government.
