"Come ready to paint!"

If you enjoy scenic views of deep river canyons, Smith Rock State Park is the place for you. Majestic rock faces, a winding river, and miles of desert beauty are sure to inspire! The Clarno Unit has towering volcanic palisades overlook an expansive sage and juniper desert. Shaniko is an authentic ghost town crumbling into the sagebrush and juniper. Wander around the 40-plus buildings, including the Columbia Southern Hotel, jailhouse and schoolhouse. Lots of old cars too!

Cellular Service in Eastern Oregon, particularly around the John Day Fossil Beds, is spotty at best. If you use a mapping app be sure to download a map of the area before arriving, and carrying a real map is always a good idea. Please note the only gas station in Fossil has limited hours and no self-serve. See “Fuel” section above.

On lodging: I recommend arranging lodging in Redmond for the first two nights, and Fossil the following night. If you would like to lodge in one place for the whole trip I would recommend Madras as an excellent place in between our two locations. It is 30 minutes from Smith Rock State Park and 1 hour from the Clarno Unit. Redmond is 15 minutes from Smith Rock State Park, but 1.5 hours to the Clarno Unit. The closest lodging to the Clarno Unit is 30 minutes away in Fossil, Oregon, at the Fossil Motel & RV Park or the Hyatt House Bed and Breakfast.

What should/shouldn’t I bring to the event? In addition to your regular painting gear, here are a few things to bring. While most painting spots will have water, it’s always a good idea to carry extra water when travelling Oregon’s backroads. If you have any special food needs be prepared and stock up in Redmond or Terrebonne, as selection will be limited in Fossil. While I’ve scheduled meals at restaurants in Fossil and Shaniko, businesses in these small towns can be idiosyncratic and close unexpectedly for the day. Packing food for a few unexpected meals is advised. Sunscreen is a must!

PLEASE try and carpool with other PAWA members anytime you can! You can post on our Facebook page to share transportation. All paint-outs are for Plein Air Washington Artists members. It is a good idea to print out this Eventbrite page and bring with you to be able to refer to this information. Thank you for signing up and HAPPY PAINTING!
