Camp Casey Whidbey Island Mon-Friday, August 21-25

Whidbey is the largest island in Washington State and one of the longest in the country. It lies about 30 miles north of Seattle in Puget Sound, is some 35 miles long and rich in farmlands, coastal bluffs, coves, beaches and forests. Camp Casey over looks the beautiful Admiralty Inlet on Puget Sound. Owned/operated by Seattle Pacific University, the camp is located in the center of the Island, directly west of historic Coupeville.

Fort Casey State Park and the beautiful Admiralty Head Lighthouse are walking distance from where we are stayingIf you prefer parking within the state park: an automated pay station for visitors to purchase a one-day or annual Discover Pass. For more info -

A short drive away is Ebey's Landing National Historical Reserve, rich with local history.

On the east side of the island is Coupeville, a quaint and historic town. Some might want to paint the pier, Penn Cove, the town itself or along Madrona Way where the rustic Captain Whidbey Inn is. Grab a bite to eat - there are a few nice restaurants in town! There is a Red Apple grocery store just west of highway 20 on S. Main Street.

Lodging is at the Bachelor Officers’ Quarters (BOQ) on the north side of the conference center grounds. There is parking for guests behind the BOQ. Its the long building facing the pool and between two Victorian houses.

Check-In August 21 after 3pm. Check-Out August 25 by 10am.

Pricing is based per room. Most rooms can sleep two. If you'd like to share a room, we only need ONE person to sign up and you work out the payment details with your roommate. We encourage roommates, as there are only 22 rooms available, but you may choose a room for yourself, if you wish. No matter the size, each room is $250 for all 4 nights. We must have 18 rooms booked by May 15 to make this event happen...!

Facilitator:  Janice Wall (NPS) and Karen Bakke (PAWA)

Meeting Time & Place:

Day 1:  Monday, August 21

Arrive anytime to start painting around the area. CHECK-IN is 3 PM or after. Select your room and attach a sticky note with your name(s) to the door. There are 2 floors with sleeping rooms, most of which are upstairs, 2 bathrooms and a small meeting room per floor. The main floor has a commercial kitchen (light use only, i.e. breakfast, fridge storage), a dining room and large meeting room. Please review camp rules/information at:

Days 2, 3 and 4:  Tuesday, August 22 - Thursday, August 24

Generally, we will start painting mid-AM and paint until 4 or 5 PM. There may be evening activities scheduled for the large meeting room. Your time is your own and you are absolutely under no obligation. Paint in a group or alone if you choose. There will be a list of suggested painting sites and we may discover new ones. You also may paint inside the BOQ over a tarp. Evening activity ideas are a Paint-Around and an art movie or instructional video. The last time we stayed at Camp Casey, some painted nocturnes! We will have a show and Tell Thursday night.

Day 5: Friday, August 25

Check out is at 10 am. If you still want to stay in the area and paint, you still will need to move your car, as other groups may be arriving.

Getting There & Directions:

There are 3 entrances to the Island. The only bridge is located at the north end spanning Deception Pass, linking Whidbey to Anacortes and the Skagit Valley. There is a ferry crossing from Port Townsend (on the Olympic Peninsula) to Keystone (which is right next to Camp Casey). Reservations are recommended. From the south, a ferry leaves Mukilteo (near Everett) for Clinton about every half hour.   Plan on waiting time during the summer. Friday and Sunday afternoons and Saturdays are traffic-heavy. Ferry schedules/fares may be found at:

The camp is located directly west of historic Coupeville. Follow signs to Camp Casey Conference Center west from Hwy 20. Enter Camp Casey at the north entrance and turn right, pass the office and take the second left to park in back of the Bachelor Officer’s Quarters (BOQ).
