Event description

Description

Our kick-off Speaker for 2019 is Marvin Jefferson presenting: 'Paul Robeson, a Chautauqua'. This living history presentation in three parts is a highly sought after performance on one of New Jersey's great celebrities, and to us, a hometown hero!

Paul Robeson was the son of a former slave. His father went to university and became a minister. He brought his family to Somerville when Paul was 12 years old because Somerville HS was integrated. Paul excelled in junior high school, Paul became All-American in football and Valedectorian at graduation. He went on to become a lawyer, singer, performer, movie star, advocate for equal rights in America. Paul Robeson traveled the world which made his equal rights activism in America stronger which also caused him difficulty. His life story is amazing and well worth the time to learn about!

Marvin Jefferson ihas been portraying Paul Robeson since the 1990s and is an instructor at Bloomfield College. Mr. Jefferson is also co-founder, producer and director of Ensemble Theatre Comany (ETC). He studied acting at the Mason Gross School of Arts, Rutgers. More on Mr. Jefferson when we introduce him!
